More Than an Art Retreat:
A Creative Journey of Discovery in Portugal
Have you ever felt stuck creatively? Perhaps you’ve taken classes, watched tutorials, and filled sketchbooks, yet still find yourself searching for that spark of inspiration that first drew you to art.
The truth is, most artists are not simply looking for instruction.They’re looking for transformation.They want to grow their skills, gain confidence, discover new ways of seeing, and reconnect with the joy of creating.
That is exactly why I designed the Portugal Mixed Media Botanical Retreat.
In April 2027, a small group of artists will gather in the beautiful Ribatejo region of Portugal for a week dedicated to creativity, exploration, and artistic growth. Surrounded by gardens, historic villages, local markets, and the beauty of the Portuguese countryside, we’ll immerse ourselves in the natural world while experimenting with exciting mixed-media techniques.
Experimentation Sparks Creativity!
One of the greatest misconceptions about creativity is that it simply appears. In reality, creativity often grows from experimentation. When we give ourselves permission to try new materials, combine unexpected techniques, and embrace the learning process, something remarkable happens. We become more curious. More confident. More willing to take artistic risks.
Throughout the retreat, we’ll explore watercolor, gouache, colored pencils, watercolor pencils, ink, and other mixed-media approaches while focusing on botanical subjects such as flowers, fruits, vegetables, herbs, and garden treasures found throughout the region.
You’ll learn how to:
- Create strong armature drawings and accurate proportions
- Understand light and form for realistic rendering
- Build color confidence using a limited palette
- Experiment with granulating pigments and texture effects
- Combine multiple mediums for depth and richness
- Develop compositions inspired by nature
- Create finished artwork you’ll be proud to take home
But this retreat is about far more than techniques.

Art flourishes in community. Some of the most meaningful breakthroughs happen when artists work alongside others who share their passion for creativity and nature.
During our 8 days together, you’ll enjoy demonstrations, hands-on instruction, personalized guidance, and conversations with fellow artists from around the world. You’ll have opportunities to ask questions, receive feedback, share ideas, and celebrate each other’s progress.
The goal is not perfection. The goal is growth.

One of the greatest gifts of travel is perspective. Stepping away from daily routines allows us to see the world—and our artwork—with fresh eyes. The estate and surrounding countryside offer endless inspiration. Flowering gardens, local produce, historic architecture, colorful markets, and the unique character of Portugal provide abundant reference material for artists.
