Explore the Magic of Watercolor and Gouache for Nature-Inspired Art
Are you a nature enthusiast with a passion for painting? Do you dream of capturing the delicate beauty of feathers, the shimmer of seashells, or the texture of fur in your art? If so, it’s time to discover the incredible potential of combining watercolor and gouache to bring your nature-inspired visions to life.
Watercolor and gouache are two versatile mediums, each with unique characteristics. While watercolor is renowned for its translucent, light-filled washes, gouache offers rich, opaque coverage that adds depth and dimension to your work. Together, they create a dynamic duo that allows for endless creative possibilities, perfect for depicting the wonders of the natural world.
When I was first introduced to watercolor, I absolutely hated it. It seemed so difficult to control, and I gave up on it pretty quickly. While studying at the New York Botanical Garden (NYBG), I discovered a British botanical artist named Margaret Mee. I purchased her book and was captivated to learn that she primarily painted tropical plants of the Amazonian rainforest. To my surprise, she worked in gouache, not watercolor. Her technique was similar to *grisailles* in oil painting, involving an undertonal drawing and layers of gouache on top. Intrigued, I decided to give it a try—and I was hooked.
Unlike watercolor, gouache allowed me to paint from dark to light, which had always felt impossible with watercolor. This approach resonated with me, and I quickly realized that working from dark to light was my natural preference. For many years, gouache became my medium of choice.
That changed when I met Jenny Phillips, an Australian watercolorist. At the time, I was the Education Coordinator at NYBG, where I had the privilege of meeting many world-renowned artists from around the globe. Watercolor was the most popular medium among botanical artists and students at NYBG, making my preference for gouache feel like being the black sheep—or, as I called myself, a “gouachist.” Jenny took an interest in my distaste for watercolor and encouraged me to join one of her classes. Reluctantly, I agreed. To my surprise, she introduced me to a fantastic new way of thinking about watercolor, showing me how to work from dark to light. I had always believed this was impossible with watercolor, but Jenny proved me wrong. Her approach unlocked something in my resistant brain, and I was hooked again.
Over the years, I’ve worked in a variety of mediums, but I now happily combine watercolor and gouache in my paintings. Despite their differences, these two water-based mediums are incredibly compatible. Each has its own strengths, and together, they create a synergy that opens doors to techniques that are difficult to achieve with either medium alone.
Imagine layering soft washes of watercolor to create a luminous background, then using gouache for crisp, detailed highlights that make your subject pop. Whether you’re painting the intricate patterns of a barn owl’s feathers or the subtle gradations of light on a seashell, the fusion of watercolor and gouache provides unmatched control and flexibility.
For the first time I am offering a 6-week Zoom workshop, “Watercolor & Gouache – Perfect Together! I designed it to help you master these mediums while focusing on nature-related subjects.
