“My trip to Costa Rica truly changed my life and sent me down a completely new creative path.”

— Pamela Mielke

One of the greatest rewards of leading art adventures isn’t simply introducing people to incredible wildlife—it’s watching people discover something new about themselves.

Over the years, I’ve seen artists gain confidence, photographers discover a new passion, and travelers return home with an entirely different way of seeing the natural world.

Sometimes, though, a journey becomes something much bigger.

Sometimes it changes the course of a person’s life.

That is exactly what happened to Pamela Mielke.

I first met Pamela on my 2019 Costa Rica Art & Photography Adventure. At the time, she had built a successful career as a floral designer for a prestigious company in California. She already possessed an exceptional eye for color, texture, and composition, but fine art was still a relatively new chapter in her life.

Neither of us realized that this trip would become a turning point.

Surrounded by rainforests alive with butterflies, orchids, tropical birds, frogs, and countless other forms of wildlife, Pamela began seeing nature through a different lens. Instead of simply admiring it, she wanted to study it, sketch it, paint it, and understand it on a deeper level.

When she returned home, the inspiration didn’t fade.

It grew.

Today, Pamela creates beautiful paintings inspired by the natural world and has transformed her own gardens with many of the tropical plants and design ideas that first captured her imagination in Costa Rica. The rainforest didn’t stay behind when the trip ended—it became part of her everyday life and continues to inspire her artwork years later.

Her paintings beautifully reflect that transformation. See her gallery below.

In Pamela’s Own Words

“My January 2019 trip to Costa Rica was one of the most incredible artistic adventures of my life. Mindy was an amazing guide, teacher, and friend who took us far beyond the typical tourist experience.

Every day brought something new—from butterflies, sloths, toucans, hummingbirds, frogs, and monkeys to breathtaking tropical plants. The biodiversity was simply unbelievable.

Traveling with a wonderful group of artists made the experience even more meaningful. We encouraged one another, shared ideas, and formed lasting friendships. Our naturalist guide, Pedro, added so much depth by sharing his knowledge of Costa Rica’s wildlife, conservation, history, and culture.

The beautiful lodges, the sounds of howler monkeys at night, and mornings filled with birdsong created memories I’ll never forget. Mindy’s instruction in sketching, watercolor, photography, and observation helped me see the rainforest through an artist’s eyes.

I returned home with endless inspiration. That trip didn’t just fill my sketchbook—it changed the direction of my creative life and continues to inspire both my paintings and the gardens I create today.”

More Than a Vacation

Pamela’s story is one of the reasons I continue leading these adventures after more than three decades.

People certainly come home with wonderful photographs, reference sketches, and unforgettable wildlife encounters. But many also return with something much more meaningful—a renewed sense of curiosity, lasting friendships, fresh creative confidence, and inspiration that continues to shape their lives for years afterward.

Watching participants grow as artists long after the trip is over is one of the greatest joys of my work. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing someone return home inspired to create, explore, and look at the natural world with fresh eyes.

Perhaps your own creative journey is waiting in the rainforest.
