Giant Grasshoppers – Titans of the Insect World

Get up close with some of the largest and most spectacular grasshoppers in the world, including Titanacris dux and Phymateus saxosus. Belonging to the order Orthoptera, grasshoppers are known for their powerful hind legs built for extraordinary jumps, their ability to produce sound through stridulation, and their impressive array of colors and patterns. These giant species take those features to the extreme—displaying brilliant greens, reds, and purples, as well as intricate body textures that make them a joy to draw.

In this class, we’ll study BicBugs’ remarkable specimens to capture the grasshopper’s anatomy, from the segmented legs and delicate antennae to the veined wings folded neatly along the body. Mindy will guide you through drawing accurate proportions, rendering detailed textures, and layering colors to highlight the insect’s bold natural palette. I’ve been invited to demonstrate how to work with colored pencils on drafting film (Dur-lar) — one of my favorite techniques for capturing luminous, layered effects. Grasshoppers are ideal for this medium, but you’re welcome to work in any medium you prefer! Whether you love watercolor, gouache, or graphite, you’ll find this class inspiring and fun.
