Leaf Mantis Workshop

Leaf Mantis – Masters of Disguise
Saturday, October 4 • 1:30–4:30 PM (ET)

Cost: $99

The Leaf Mantis (Deroplatys lobata), often called the Dead Leaf Mantis, is a true marvel of camouflage. Each individual displays a one-of-a-kind arrangement of patterns, textures, and striations—no two are ever alike. Their coloration ranges from pale tans to deep, rich browns, with females often sporting especially dramatic markings.

In this workshop, we’ll work from BicBugs’ detailed specimens to capture the mantis’s remarkable leaf-like shapes, from its jagged “edges” to the intricate veins and mottling that help it blend seamlessly into its surroundings. Mindy will demonstrate how to translate these subtle variations into line, shading, and color so your drawing reflects the mantis’s unique character.

Perfect for artists of all levels who want to develop skills in drawing texture, pattern, and organic forms while learning about one of nature’s most captivating insects.

All levels welcome. Reference photos and specimen images will be provided for those attending virtually.
