White-lined Sphinx Moth – The Hummingbird Moth of the Southwest

Saturday, October 4 • 1:30–4:30 PM (ET)

Cost: $99

The White-lined Sphinx Moth (Hyles lineata) is a striking and energetic pollinator, beloved across the American Southwest. Often mistaken for a hummingbird in flight, this moth’s bold cream stripes, velvety brown wings, and pink hindwings make it one of the most recognizable and popular species in the region.

In this class, we’ll work from BicBugs’ stunning specimens to study the moth’s anatomy, wing structure, and distinctive patterning. Mindy will guide you through creating accurate line work, capturing the fine textures of the wings and body, and layering color to bring your illustration to life. You’ll also learn tips for depicting iridescent and velvety surfaces in a way that feels both realistic and vibrant.

Ideal for artists of all skill levels who love moths, pollinators, and the challenge of rendering bold patterns with subtle detail.

All levels welcome. Reference photos and specimen images will be provided for those attending virtually.
