This 8-week live course will help you understand how color works and how watercolor and gouache can work together.

Through demonstrations, guided exercises, and nature-inspired projects, you’ll learn to mix and adjust color with greater confidence while exploring the possibilities of both transparent and opaque paint.

The goal isn’t to memorize color recipes. It’s to understand color well enough to create your own.

What You’ll Learn

Together we’ll explore:

• Hue, value, saturation, and color bias
• Clean, intentional color mixing
• How to lighten, darken, brighten, and mute colors
• Creating beautiful neutrals without making mud
• Transparency, opacity, layering, and glazing
• Limited palettes and expanded color possibilities
• Combining watercolor and gouache
• Analyzing and mixing the colors you see in nature
• Creating repeatable color mixtures and your own color recipes

You’ll develop a better understanding of why your mixtures work—or don’t—and how to adjust them.

Why Add Gouache?

Watercolor is transparent and luminous. Gouache is opaque, forgiving, and versatile.

Using them together gives you more choices. You can preserve the beautiful transparency of watercolor while using gouache to work light over dark, make corrections, add highlights, and create effects that aren’t possible with transparent watercolor alone.

More choices give you more freedom to experiment.

We’ll meet for two hours each week for demonstrations, color-mixing exercises, Q&A, feedback, and critique.

You’ll see how I make color decisions, troubleshoot mixtures, and move between watercolor and gouache as I work.

All live classes will be recorded and available for review after the course.
