Protecting Florida’s Black Bears: Art for Conservation

I am deeply saddened by the decision of Florida Wildlife Commission to vote on allowing a bear hunt. This October, Florida’s black bears face a new threat — a scheduled bear hunt that could endanger not only individual animals, but the survival of family groups, including mothers and cubs. As an artist deeply inspired by the natural world, I created this drawing of a mother bear and her cub to raise awareness of what’s at stake. These gentle forest dwellers are not just icons of wilderness; they are essential to the balance of Florida’s ecosystems. That’s why I’m donating proceeds from this piece to BearDefenders.org, an organization dedicated to protecting bears and advocating for ethical wildlife management.

Myth vs. Fact: The Truth About Florida’s Bears

There are so many myths about bears and here is just one:

Myth: If you see bears in your neighborhood, it means they are overpopulating.

Fact: Bears aren’t “overpopulating” — they’re being displaced. As Florida’s forests are cleared for new housing developments, shopping centers, and roadways, bears lose vital habitat. Add to this the problem of unsecured garbage and food attractants in residential areas, and the result is increased bear-human interactions. These conflicts are driven by human development, not bear overpopulation.

Understanding this difference is crucial. Florida’s bears are adapting to shrinking wild spaces, and their survival depends on our willingness to coexist.

Why This Matters

Florida black bears were once on the brink of extinction. Thanks to conservation efforts, they’ve made a slow recovery — but their future remains fragile. A sanctioned bear hunt threatens decades of progress. Removing bears from the landscape not only causes suffering but also disrupts the delicate balance of ecosystems where they play a critical role as seed dispersers and forest regenerators.

As an artist, I believe in the power of imagery to tell stories and stir emotions. My drawing of a mother and cub is both a tribute to their resilience and a call to action. By sharing this work and supporting organizations like Bear Defenders, we can amplify awareness and protect these animals for generations to come.

Art for Conservation

Art has always been a bridge between beauty and advocacy. This bear portrait is part of my ongoing mission to use art as a tool for conservation. Proceeds from its sale will directly support Bear Defenders in their fight to stop the hunt and protect wildlife.

Together, we can ensure that Florida’s forests remain alive with the presence of black bears — not as relics of the past, but as thriving symbols of our shared natural heritage.
