Meet the Sloth Team
Writer Denise Gillen holds a Bachelor’s degree in Biology and spent her career as a senior keeper at the San Diego Zoo, where she raised a wide range of species—from hummingbirds to giraffes.
In 2018, her path took an unexpected turn when she moved to Costa Rica to volunteer as a full-time sloth caregiver at the Toucan Rescue Ranch, a world-renowned wildlife rescue center. There, she dedicated two years to caring for orphaned sloths—feeding them around the clock and preparing them for eventual release back into the wild.
Today, she shares her experiences through engaging, whimsical, and scientifically grounded stories inspired by her time working closely with wildlife.
Artist Mindy Lighthipe is passionate about exploring the natural world and discovering beauty in every rock, stream, and forest. Through careful observation and study in the field, she brings her subjects to life with both accuracy and artistry.
Her work celebrates the beauty of nature while inspiring a deeper understanding of conservation and biodiversity. Frequent travels to Costa Rica have deepened her connection to the rainforest and its remarkable wildlife.
It was through these adventures that she met Denise Gillen—an encounter that ultimately inspired the creation of this book.
